Life in Amberley
Walking the South Downs Way Through Amberley
A local welcome for walkers, with time to explore the village.

There is something about arriving in Amberley on foot. After the open slopes of the Downs, the village offers a different pace: flint walls, thatched roofs and lanes that reward a little unhurried exploring.
Whether you are walking a longer stretch of the South Downs Way or planning a day outdoors, leave room in your plans for the village itself. A useful stop can become one of the most memorable parts of the day.
Plan the walk before you set off
Choose your section using an up-to-date map and the official route guidance. The South Downs National Park Authority provides walks from Amberley towards Washington, as well as local circular routes. Pick a distance and level of climbing that suit your group, and check for current route notices before travelling.
This article is a local introduction, rather than a turn-by-turn route description. Use the National Park's Amberley to Washington guide for detailed planning.
Remember the village is a separate stop
Do not assume the trail takes you past every village business. Mark Amberley High Street and your intended refreshments stop on your map, and allow time for the detour and your return to the route. It is much nicer to explore without watching the clock.
Amberley station is beside the museum entrance, rather than in the centre of the village. The museum advises checking train times carefully because not every train stops here. Look up your outward and return journeys before you set off.
A little something for the journey
At Amberley Village Stores, walkers can browse refreshments, snacks, everyday supplies and walking essentials. Ask us what is available on the day, and check the current shop opening times when planning your visit. Carry enough water and food for your walk rather than relying on finding an open business later.
Make time to linger
A village stroll, a photograph of a cottage garden or a moment to look back towards the hills can turn a walking stop into a proper visit. Keep gateways clear, respect residents' privacy and leave paths and lanes as you would like to find them.
