Life in Amberley

The Flavours of Sussex

Traditional thatched cottage in Amberley, West Sussex

One of the pleasures of a village shop is discovering how much good food is made close to home. A bottle for supper, something sweet with the tea or vegetables for the weekend can carry a little of Sussex with them.

At Amberley Village Stores, our local range has grown through relationships with producers across the county. Availability changes with the seasons and with deliveries, which is part of what keeps the shelves interesting.

A taste of the surrounding villages

Nutbourne is one of the familiar local names in our range, associated with both wine and produce. Goodwood dairy brings another part of West Sussex to the shop. Then there are preserves from Storrington, honey from West Chiltington, biscuits from the Horsham area and coffee from Arundel.

These are examples of the suppliers we work with, rather than a promise that every product will be on the shelf on every visit. Ask us what has arrived and what is particularly good at the moment.

Let the seasons help choose supper

Seasonal shopping begins with a simple question: what looks good today? A different vegetable, a piece of local cheese or a jar you have not tried before can be enough to give a familiar meal a fresh direction.

There is no need to turn it into a grand project. Bread, cheese and something sharp from a jar make an excellent starting point for an unhurried lunch. Add what you enjoy, and let the occasion be as modest or as generous as you please.

Local food for real life

We know that most meals happen between everything else. That is why local produce shares the shop with everyday groceries and practical supper options. You might make something from scratch, bring together a few favourite ingredients or choose a COOK meal and add vegetables from the shop.

The aim is food you enjoy taking home and a shopping trip that fits the day you are having. Supporting local producers does not have to mean making life complicated.

Something to take away from Amberley

If you are visiting, a local treat can be a lovely reminder of your stay. Ask about Sussex drinks, preserves or biscuits that travel well. If you are buying for someone else, check the label for ingredients and storage information before choosing.

Explore our existing products page for an introduction to the shop's range, or come in and see what is on the shelves. We are always happy to help you find a little taste of Sussex.

A little shop, a lot to love.
